For example, the Carthaginian general named Hannibal used vinegar when he used elephants to cross the Alps and invade Italy in the year 218 BC. In Asia Japanese samurai drank rice vinegar because they thought they could boost their strength by drinking it on a regular basis. In fact, soldiers throughout history have drunk vinegar as a tonic to provide strength and energy to troops. The ancient Romans drank “nosca” as a refreshing drink. It helped to kill any infectious bacteria that were contained in the water. So the vinegar helped to make the winter healthier to drink.

In ancient writings from the Middle East vinegar is recorded as being used as medicine. That includes digestion, expectorant, and clotting. The sour drink was also used to heal wounds. People in the region also used vinegar as a condiment at meals.

The Bible also mentioned vinegar several times as wine. That includes the use of the liquid as a drink in the New Testament.

Then during the Black Plague that took place from the 1300s to 1700s doctor’s rubbed vinegar on their own bodies when treating the sick. It was infused with various essential oils/herbs and protected them when treating contagious patients.

During 1394 some French winemakers created a method for producing vinegar known as the Orleans method. It involved fermenting wine in oak barrels and siphoning the vinegar at the bottom of the barrel using a spigot. About 15% of the vinegar remained, which contained “mother” of vinegar and bacteria that floated on the top. New cider/wine was then added to the barrel, which was started by the leftover vinegar.

The French winemakers started a guilt that included master vinegar makers. They could supply the vinegar market better by using this Orleans method. This was important since the vinegar market had become very profitable by this time in history.

There’s also a legend of four convicted thieves who survived attacking sick people by a drinking a vinegar tonic. It was infused with garlic to add more antibacterial properties. In fact, today’s garlic-infused vinegar is known as Four Thieves Vinegar.
